austin special chicago developmental training program

The Austin Special Developmental Training Center is licensed and certified by the State of Illinois as a work activity center and developmental training program. The program offers vocational, social, and educational services to adults 18 years and older. Individuals are trained through in-house, actual work experiences. Three levels of vocational competence determine the placement and the degree of supervision and support each client will need in order to maintain and improve skills necessary for the level of independence of which they are capable.

The program regularly provides services that include general counseling, enhancement of speech and communication skills, basic academics, self-help and daily living skills, art, field trips, social events, gym and swimming at the Chicago Park District, and participation in Special Olympics and other community-based mainstream activities. Transportation services are provided for individuals who are unable to use public transportation.

While the ultimate goal of the DT program is to enhance their skills and abilities to reach their potential, as well as prepare them for independence and competitive employment, individuals may continue in the program for as long as they need.
